We’ve entered the half way mark of 2016. The month of June is jampacked with Indian events in Singapore. You can explore the colourful Hari Raya bazaar, meet with Nagesh Kukunoor for his film Dhanak and lastly hobnob with celebrities at SIIMA. For the full list of happenings, here is our round up of events for the month of June: 1. Hari Raya Bazaar 2016 Date: 4th June to 5th July 2016 The fasting month of Ramadan begins in June. Ramadan brings us the annual Hari Raya Bazaar. The bazaar has an interesting variety of offerings ranging from home decor items to delicious food from around the region. Be prepared for quite a walk as the bazaar stretches from Joo Chiat Complex all the way down to One KM Mall. The streets will be decorated with beautiful lights for the entire month. 2. The Ghanta Awards 2016 in Singapore Date: 4th June 2016 The Ghanta Awards are India’s answer to The Golden Raspberry Awards (better known as the Razzies). The Ghantas award the worst in Bollywood films with the usual categories like “Worst Film of the Year” and unusual categories like “Shit Nobody Saw”. It mixes awards with hilarious comedy. Already into its 6th edition, The Ghanta Awards come to Singapore for the first time. With hosts like stand up comedian Radhika Vaz, the event is guaranteed to make you laugh. 3. IWA Summer Bazaar 2016 Date: 9th June 2016 The Indian Women’s Association Singapore’s annual Summer Bazaar will feature handicrafts and interesting items for purchase. 4. Zak Salaam India Expo Date: 9th June to 12th June 2016 Other than the Ramadan Bazaar at Geylang Serai, you can shop in air-conditioned comfort at the Salaam India Expo – Hari Raya Edition. 5. Colors of Indus Fair – The Ramadaan Edition Date: 10th June 2016 Colors of Indus Fair brings the first ever Ramadaan edition of their popular bazaar. You can expect to find curated fashion and accessories. An excellent stop for your Hari Raya / Eid shopping. 6. Salim Sulaiman Rock Singapore (Postponed) Date: 10th June 2016 The Merchants of Sufi Music, Salim Sulaiman, are coming to Singapore with their foot tapping and soulful music. Experience the magic of Sufi music with Shukran Allah and then dance away with Ainvayi Ainvayi 7. Dhanak Film Preview – Watch it before its worldwide release Dhanak is the latest film by acclaimed director Nagesh Kukunoor. Be the first to watch it at this film preview. The film chronicles the journey of a blind boy and his sister as they travel across Rajasthan to get his eyesight back. The film will leave you with the feeling that life is indeed beautiful. 8. Second Decoction by Karthik Kumar Date: 17th June and 19th June 2016 Karthik Kumar returns to our shores after his sell out #PokeMe show. His brand new act, Second Decoction, is a celebration of the Middle Class. With rave reviews for the new show, I am looking forward to this one. 9. Real Reels with Nagesh Kukunoor Date: 17th June Meet Nagesh Kukunoor, the acclaimed director of films like Dor and Hyderabad Blues. He will be talking about his latest film, Dhanak. Hosted by the Indian Women’s Association of Singapore, the event promises to be an interesting discussion on Nagesh’s work. 10. Sorabh Pant – My Baby Thinks I’m Funny Date: 18th June 2016 Sorabh Pant will be performing his new stand up special which is all about the madness and joy of becoming a father. He has a stellar resume having performed 1000 shows in 60 cities across 15 countries. Sorabh has been hailed as one of India’s brightest comedians by Khaleej Times. 11. Dhanak Film Screening with Nagesh Kukunoor Date: 18th June 2016 When is the last time you watched a film with the film’s director? Never? Then come down to Golden Village Vivocity and catch Dhanak with Nagesh Kukunoor. 12. Daniel Fernandes LIVE 2016 Date: 18th June 2016 Daniel Fernandes is a popular Indian stand up comedian. Videos of his stand up routines garner close to a million views. His dark comedy has a massive following and he intelligently weaves social issues into his routines. 13. SIIMA 2016 – South Indian International Movie Awards 2016 (Telugu & Kannada) Date: 30th June 2016 The ultimate South Indian Movie celebration comes to town for the first time. Be entertained by electric performances, red carpet appearances and spot the top stars of the South Indian film industry. Oh, do note that its a 2 day extravaganza.
